Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better than the general public by the name of Queen Latifah - is an American actress, rapper and acrobat. Her work as a music, film and TV artist has earned an impressive two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won an Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, NJ. The daughter is Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple divorced when Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah was raised in the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic high school located at Newark New Jersey. Her stage name Latifah meaning delicate and very gentle in Arabic was bestowed to her by her aunt when she was only eight. Latifah has always been large, at 5'10" and was the power forward of her high-school basketball team. In her high school's play Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah started beatboxing in the fresh rap ladies. Latifah is one of the first members of the Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group of MCs around DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King, recorded a demo recording of Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was interested by the track. It was signed by Latifah, and released her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
